Mel Thompson for Willem

Story

I'm taking part in the 2017 Melbourne Marathon Festival and hoping to raise much needed funds for CPEC.

I am fundraising for a young man that inspires me to challenge the status quo and this is his story.

"Hi may name is Willem and I have Dystonic Cerebral Palsy, having been delivered 15 weeks premature because my Mum got sick with a severe form of Pre-eclampsia (HELLP's). I was diagnosed at 11months and started at CPEC when I was 2years old. My type of cerebral palsy makes it hard to control and perform specific actions. I need special equipment and assistance to sit, stand, eat and do activities (I love to paint!) Fortunately, my speech is only mildly effected, I love to chat (like my dad!), and I can already read!

CPEC have been instrumental in my progress this year - I am beginning to step and push up through my legs when asked! The team help me with all aspects of living with CP, from therapies (Physio, OT, and Speech pathology) to equipment, funding and support for my parents! Please help support CPEC as they help me to achieve my goals of writing, sitting , standing, and eventually walking alone"

This October, I’m going to be sweating it out and doing my best to complete a gruelling course through the streets of Melbourne and ending back at the world famous 'G!

I am honoured to be a part of this amazing race and helping a great cause, and I’d really appreciate your support in this endeavour.

Thank you for your support and helping to make a difference

CPEC (Cerebral Palsy Education Centre)

CPEC is a unique and specialised service for children and young people with Cerebral Palsy and similar conditions and their families. We are the only Centre of its type in Australia and we are recognised around the world for our success in working with children with CP.
We provide physiotherapy, occupational and speech therapy to children as well as helping them to access essential equipment they need in their daily lives. Every single child who attends CPEC no matter how severe their disability learns to communicate. If you are switched on but can't tell others what you feel or need life can be very frustrating. Learning to communicate is life changing.

It currently costs $34,000 per child per year to receive the much needed “Learning for Life” education programs from CPEC. The Government only funds $7,900 of this so we rely on generous people making donations to help keep us operating.
Our kids are inspiring overcoming obstacles to perform everyday activities, we need your support to help them live as independetly as possible.
