Run and not grow weary
Story
I am taking part in the 2017 Melbourne Marathon Festival and hoping to raise much needed funds for a great cause. I chose again the Australian Cancer Research Foundation (ACRF), in particular looking at the skin cancer.
So far, I had 6 moles removed which were at melanoma risk: I am still seeing a specialist every 6 months and there is no doubt I will have more surgeries in the future. Here are the most common facts about skin cancer:
- Melanoma is the third most common cancer in Australian men and women;
- In 2017, 13,941 Australians are expected to be diagnosed with melanoma;
- Melanoma incidence in Australia and New Zealand is four times higher than in Canada, the UK and the US;
- Melanoma is the most common cancer in young Australians aged 15–39 years old;
- There is a 90.4 percent of surviving at least 5 years after diagnosis.
This October, I’m going to have a great challenge for myself and raising money gives me a huge motivation. My personal time for last year's half marathon was 1:41:09 (907th out of 11,000 people) and I will push to lower it. I stopped smoking in 2016 after 16 years and I have not re-started since, and I want to celebrate it by proving to myself that it is never too late to make the right decision. In addition to that, I feel proud on joining the Melbourne community for such an amazing event.
I am so glad to help for a great cause and I would really appreciate your support in this endeavour.
Thank you for helping to make a difference.
Nicola
Australian Cancer Research Foundation (ACRF)
At Australian Cancer Research Foundation, we know that only brilliant ideas can tackle something as big as cancer. That is why since 1984, we have given scientists the technology, equipment and infrastructure they need for pioneering research.
From small vaccines to big machines our funding has supported some of the biggest outcomes in cancer research, across Australia. ACRF supporters have backed landmark projects such as; the development of the world’s first cancer vaccine (for cervical cancer), the establishment of a precision medicine program working towards the goal of zero deaths from childhood cancer and the creation of the innovative MRI-Linac which will improve patient outcomes and reduce the trauma associated with radiation therapy.
By funding research that seeks to progress and transform the way we prevent, detect and treat ALL cancers, we are committed to our vision of one day reaching a world without cancer.
